Is There a Problem With Apu?
2018-04-16 10:24:25 ET by Jack Anderson
Started in 1989, The Simpsons is one of the longest running shows in America. Currently in its 29th season, The Simpsons has become an iconic fictional family and has become part of the American culture. Everyone knows and love Bart and Homer Simpson. But recently, the show has been drawn into a controversy about one of its second characters, Apu.
For those who do not know about the character or do not remember him in detail, Apu Nahasapeemapetilon is an Indian immigrant, owner of the store Kwik-E-Mart in Springfield. Known for his catch phrase "Thank you, come again", he is portrayed by the voice of Hank Azaria - known to all Friends fans by playing David, the scientist character in love with Phoebe Buffay.
The character of Apu is clearly a stereotyped caricature of Indian immigrants. But because of the wild popularity of The Simpsons series, some are arguing that the character is actually having a negative impact on the Indian community.
Last year, stand-up comic actor Hari Kondabolu wrote and starred in a documentary titled The Problem with Apu. Directed by Michael Melamedoff, the film centered around the fact that some Indians find the character of Apu offensive. In an era of social media, the press caught up with the controversy until the show actually had to reply, in some form.
The series actually referred to it in its episode No Good Read Goes Unpunished. Aired on April 8, 2018, the episode includes a scene in which Marge (the mother) and Lisa (the daughter) talk about a book that Marge loved as a child. Marge explains that the book contains material that could be found offensive nowadays. Marge starts to erase parts of the book, but says that she will miss the emotional journey. When Marge asks her daughter what to do, Lisa then replies "It's hard to say. Something that started decades ago and was applauded and inoffensive is now politically incorrect. What can you do?" They then look at a picture of Apu.
After the episode aired, Kondabolu commented and said that he did not appreciate that the show would summarize the controversy by only referring to it as being politically incorrect. While some argues that Apu is an offensive character and should be either edited or replaced, some other argue that The Simpsons series is also showing many other stereotypes, such as the Italian mob boss, as one of its well-known examples.
If you want to make up your own mind, we suggest you to watch The Simpsons, as well as the documentary The Problem with Apu.

First the OAV (Original Anime Video) will be released in July 2018. Second, we learned that Kyoto Animation is actually already working on a new Violet Evergarden project.
Let's hope that the cliffhanger of episode 4 will, at last, have some continuation.
Christopher Nolan Advocates to Keep Celluloid Film Infrastructure
2018-04-08 10:34:05 ET by Jack Anderson
Filmmaker Christopher Nolan traveled to India and participated in a series of events focused on the future of film. While most movies are currently filmed in digital, many argue that digital is still inferior to celluloid film. For those who have never seen the difference, digital is providing a sense of realism that is in clear contrast to celluloid, which is providing a sense of a dream-like world.
When the Hollywood industry focused heavily on digital and 3D, especially since the release of James Cameron's Avatar in 2008, some filmmakers such as Nolan focused on 70mm IMAX format and continued to shoot on actual film.
But as the industry is moving towards digital, it is becoming harder and harder to find the analog infrastructure for film. Therefore, Nolan explained that "it's not about film versus digital. It's about preserving this medium for future generations."
As an immediate outcome of some of those discussions in Mumbai, two participants, acclaimed filmmakers Santosh Sivan and Sudeep Chatterjee, pledged that they would shoot their next films on celluloid.
Nolan is famously known for The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, Interstellar and more recently Dunkirk.

ER Star Anthony Edwards Making His Broadway Debut
2018-04-05 08:43:57 ET by Jack Anderson
Actor Anthony Edwards, famous for his portrayal of Dr. Mark Greene in NBC's ER television series, is making his Broadway debut in the play Children of a Lesser God.
In an interview with Theater Mania, Edwards went back to his time on ER and how the series felt like a televised play at the time. "It felt like doing a play, different versions every week. I kept exploring and exploring, which is what you do in a play, and the writing supported that. Because of what we were doing technically, we were able to do four or five pages of dialogue all in one shot, and that required being sharp and being on it in the same way as theater."
Asked about the incredible popularity of the long-lasting series, Edwards commented on how they tried to convey emotions through realism. "We used to have an expression that if you held an emotion too long, you're out, because that's not what real people do. Real people don't hold for commercials when someone has just died. That sensationalism that people think is dramatic actually isn't."
Edwards also explained how it felt coming back to work after taking a long break, focused on his family life. "I took a big break after ER, very intentionally, when my kids were little. We moved here to New York, and I spent a lot of time walking them to school. I was fortunate to meet people who said, "You're never gonna regret spending time with your kids." There was no way any job was gonna take that from me. I had the [financial] luxury and spent 10 years doing that. In that same way, it's really fun now going back to work. It feels like it's for the right reasons. It's pretty heavenly."

Stranger Things creators sued for copying a short film
2018-04-04 03:06:57 ET by Jack Anderson
Stranger Things was an instant hit. Released by Netflix, the series, now having released two seasons, follows a cast of young characters facing adventures in a strange world.
Filmmaker Charlie Kessler has filed a lawsuit about Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer, for allegedly stealing his ideas for a very similar show, based on a short film he produced named Montauk as well as his idea to produce a feature film based on a script named The Montauk Project.
According to court documents, Kessler says he met and discussed his script with the Duffer brothers during a premiere party at the Tribeca Film Festival in April 2014. He alleges he did not know that Stranger Things mirrored his own ideas until it was released in July 2016.
Kessler is suing for breach of implied contract and is seeking monetary damages.
As for the Montauk short film itself, it tells a paranormal science-fiction story and deals with secret government projects and conspiracy theories. It also features a cop that is haunted by his past.
Both Netflix and the Duffer brothers did not comment the lawsuit at this time.
Montauk, which had been available for viewing on Vimeo, was removed from public viewing on Tuesday afternoon.
New book about 2001:A Space Odyssey, to celebrate its 50th anniversary
2018-04-03 11:00:04 ET by Jack Anderson
Fifty years ago, Director Stanley Kubrick released "2001: A Space Odyssey", a movie that would forever change not only the sci-fi genre, but the entire movie industry. The film was a real milestone and is now getting a new book about its inception.
Titled simply "Space Odyssey" and released by Simon & Schuster, the book goes into much details in the creation of the film, as well as the relationship between Stanley Kubrick and author Arthur C. Clarke.
Author Michael Benson was interviewed by the site Space.com and, interestingly, explains the reasons why he chose to write the book:
(...)when the 50th anniversary started appearing on the horizon, I thought it might be a good thing to do — it might be, in a way, cathartic, and help me understand the film better [to] write about it.
You can read an exclusive excerpt of the book here.

Chris Carter Claps Back at Critics
2017-11-27 12:33:17 ET by Nikki Spender
Although a great deal of anticipation swirled around The X-Files Season 10 revival back in 2015, it’s safe to say that a good number of fans and critics alike had their misgivings. Some were predetermined to believe that the show could never be as good as it once was, while others were put off before “My Struggle” even aired due to leaked information that Mulder and Scully would not be a couple. After the episodes began to air, some were content to see all the old faces in all the old familiar places, while others felt let down by a myriad of issues including the introduction of new characters, thin and obvious plotlines, the state of the Mulder/Scully relationship, and the list went on. But some shakiness is understandable – even though you never forget how to ride a bike, it’s perfectly natural for someone to a wobble a little on their first time back on a bicycle in 12 years.
Carter has historically made a point not only to pay attention to fan feedback, but also take heed of fan complaints. Where the Season 10 Revival is concerned, Carter remains firm that some of those Season 10 wrinkles have been ironed out ahead of the Season 11 premiere on January 3, 2018.
Giving his two cents on the situation to Michael Ausiello of TV Line, Carter explains, “We [relaunched] from a standing start after not having been on the air for 12 years — there was some reacquainting that had to be achieved…It was like old friends getting back together. We had to shake some of the stiffness out.”
Carter goes on to say to TVLine that he is confident that Season 11 will “hit the ground running,” and further clarifies, “I think that we’re all in fighting shape now.”
The TVLine article curiously points out that Carter is particularly “bullish” in his defense of the episode penned by X-Files actor/writer alum Darin Morgan, “Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster,” which seemed to be one of the most lauded episodes of the season. Nonetheless, Carter slapped down the haters by describing the episode as, “original, smart, funny… everything you expect [from Morgan]”. I would have to say that I agree with that sentiment.
Everyone’s a critic, but hopefully Season 11’s performance will put some of the doubts and complaints to rest.
