Roseanne Barr Breaks Down in Podcast Interview
2018-06-25 07:55:12 ET by Jack Anderson

As we have reported last month, ABC canceled hit TV series revival Roseanne, after some racist public comments from lead actress Roseanne Barr on social media platform Twitter.

Following the announcement from the studio, ABC has then ordered a spin-off series, The Conners (working title), in which Barr will have no connection whatsoever, whether financially or artistically.

Since the series was actually called Roseanne, it is not difficult to understand how affected the actress must have been, whether or not she deserved what happened is another story.

On Sunday, a podcast interview with Rabbi Shmuley Boteach was partially released. Roseanne Barr can be heard crying during the interview, mentioning that she was under the influence of the sleeping drug Ambien when she posted the famous Tweet comparing Barack Obama Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett to the movie Planet of the Apes.
Ironically, the maker of the drug, pharmaceutical company Sanofi-Aventis publicly shared that "while all pharmaceutical treatments have side effects, racism is not a known side effect of any Sanofi medication."

A partial transcript can be found here.
Meanwhile, the audio podcast can be downloaded here.

Finally, when asked if she regretted her actions, she obviously confirmed and ended up saying "I've lost everything."

Less Episodes For 'Supernatural' Season 14
2018-06-24 20:50:36 ET by Brittany Allen

CW confirmed the popular series, Supernatural, will receive only 20 episodes in their upcoming 14th season. This is down from previous seasons of 23 episodes.

Supernatural is a fantasy horror television series that began in 2005 and follows two brothers as they hunt supernatural beings and investigate paranormal forces. Originally planned for only three seasons, Supernaturals' solid ratings resulted in renewal. The fifth season concluded the series’ main storyline which fans feared would mean the end for the Winchester brothers. Fortunately, Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, who play main characters Sam and Dean Winchester, were still under contract and CW renewed Supernatural for a sixth season. Series creator, Eric Kripke, stepped down from the series and was replaced with both a new showrunner, Sera Gamble, and a new storyline. Kripke discusses the sixth season transition here.

The Supernatural fan base remained loyal through this change and the CW series continues to have high ratings almost ten years later. Does this drop in recent episodes mean a nearing end? So far, the shortest season in the series run is season three with 16 episodes. The Hollywood Writers’ Strike, which halted most scripted television series, was to blame. Kripke explains how the writer’s strike affected the third season here.

While fans may feel short changed, there are still a good number of episodes slated for the upcoming season. There might be some concern over the future of Supernatural, but for now we can look forward to seeing the Winchester saga continue this fall. Supernatural will premier season 14 on the CW Thursday, October 11 at 8/7c.

Return of the Jedi Blaster Prop Auctioned for $550,000
2018-06-24 16:31:39 ET by Jack Anderson

On Saturday, a movie prop from the Star Wars franchise was auctioned in Las Vegas. The item was a blaster, used by Han Solo, portrayed by Harrison Ford, in the movie Return of the Jedi.

The fake weapon was made mostly of wood and was part of a collection from film's art director James Schoppe, who was nominated for an Oscar for his work on the film.

Knowing the fate of character Han Solo in The Force Awakens (2015), it is a safe bet that Mr. Solo would no longer require this weapon.

But the blaster was not the most expensive Star Wars prop to date. Last year, an R2-D2 droid unit sold for an outstanding $2.76 million dollars in Los Angeles.

One thing is certain, the force is expensive.

Bring On Nostalgia With 90’s TV Reboots
2018-06-23 20:07:43 ET by Brittany Allen

MTV has announced the popular 90’s animation,Daria, will be returning. Nickelodeon rolls out Double Dare, Blues Clues, Rocko’s Modern Life, and Clarissa Explains It All.

On Thursday, Viacom and brand MTV announced the launching of MTV Studios. In an effort to produce reboots of MTV’s own titles, MTV Studios has several hit titles in development that will be available to SVOD buyers such as Apple, Netflix, and Hulu.
Among these titles are Daria & Jodie, Aeon Flux, The Real World, and Made. There has been some talk about adding Beavis and Butt-Head to the list of series, but nothing has been confirmed. New titles The Valley and Straight Up Ghosted, are being produced for MTV’s cable network as loosely scripted reality shows.

The Valley, akin to The Hills and The City, follows a group of young adults navigating relationships, life decisions, and coming of age experiences. The Valley is set in an Arizona town on the border of Mexico and the United States, providing a twist as these 20-somethings discover common bonds between two countries. Straight Up Ghosted is based on the social media concept of “ghosting”, and the stories of those who confront lost family members, friends, and lovers about why they were ghosted.

MTV president Chris McCarthy explains their move to create MTV studios and the development of new programming here.

As for Nickelodeon, also owned by Viacom, the popular 1990’s gameshow Double Dare will return this Monday, June 25th at 8pm on Nickelodeon. Also in production and set to return is a remake of the popular preschool program Blues Clues. Rocko returns in a one hour special of Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling, which is expected to release sometime this year. You can watch a commentary by the voice of Rocko, Carlos Alazraqui, and the trailer here.

In early development is the reboot of Clarissa Explains It All, with plans for Melissa Joan Hart to reprise her role as Clarissa Darling. Nickelodeon brought back Hey Arnold last Fall in Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie, also released on DVD early this year.

Nickelodeon has been successful in the expansion of their preschool portfolio which includes PAW Patrol, Blaze and the Monster Machines, Rusty Rivets, and Top Wing; all recently renewed for the 2018-2019 season. Nickelodeon continues to develop original live action and animation series such as Cousins For Life, Zoofari, Pony, Los Casagrandes, and Musical Dares while expanding on popular franchises like Thomas & Friends, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Sponge Bob.

'Springfield Confidential', A New Book About The Simpsons
2018-06-23 16:51:32 ET by Jack Anderson

Earlier this month, a new book on the TV series The Simpsons was published. Titled Springfield Confidential and written by Mike Reiss and Mathew Klickstein, the book spans over decades of the critically acclaimed animation series, as the subtitle explains: Jokes, Secrets, and Outright Lies from a Lifetime Writing for The Simpsons.

As you can well imagined with such books, it is filled with many anecdotes, such as Reiss mentioning that the joke about Trump becoming President in an episode from 2000 was an "absurd joke".

Reiss also shares personal details, such as mentioning that when he became showrunner of the series, he grew "morbidly obese".

Following the recent controversy around the immigrant Indian character Apu, Reiss says that the character was always treated intelligently, but also hints at being the right time to remove the character from the series.

Finally, in order to celebrate the release of the book, we have uploaded a special wallpaper based on the book cover.

Published by Dey Street Books, Springfield Confidential is available on hardcover and digital format.

David Lynch Releases Memoir 'Room to Dream'
2018-06-23 08:55:03 ET by Jack Anderson

Critically acclaimed David Lynch has done everything in his career. He has been a writer, a producer, a director, a painter, a drawer and a musician. If there was one word that would describe him best, artist would definitely seem appropriate.

While most know him for Twin Peaks or Mulholland Drive, Lynch has spent his entire life creating, producing short films as early as in the 1960's.

Now, at age 72, Lynch is releasing his memoir. Titled Room to Dreams, the book, co-written with Kristine McKenna, spans seven decades of his life. McKenna interviewed more than a hundred friends, family members and colleagues of Lynch. The end result is almost 600 pages of not only interesting tidbits. As you can expect with David Lynch, the format is also original. For instance, in each chapter, McKenna is describing some stories that were reported to her, only to have Lynch himself debunking some of the stories by telling his own version. As you know, the truth is always subjective in Lynch's work.

Room to Dream has been published by Random House on June 19.

Marvel's Spider-Man Spinoff, Silk, Slinging Into Development
2018-06-23 01:39:08 ET by Brittany Allen

Sony is continuing the offshoot Spider-Man franchise with the development of Silk. Produced by Amy Pascal, Silk will join other Marvel Comics characters, Venom, Silver and Black, and Nightwatch, as Spider-Man spin-offs.

The character Silk, like Peter Parker, was bitten by the same radioactive spider that gave Parker his powers. Silk, whose real name is Cindy Moon, has difficulty controlling her abilities and remained hidden for years. After discovering Cindy’s existence, Spider-Man rescues the new spider-woman, who calls herself Silk. Silk goes on to explore her abilities and the connection between them.

Silk isn’t a new character for Marvel. First appearing in The Amazing Spider-Man Vol.3 issue 1, the character proved popular and was given her own ongoing series. As of date, Silk has appeared in 142 issues of Marvel comics.

Cindy Moon, played by Tiffany Espensen, appeared briefly in the film Spider-Man: Homecoming as Peter’s classmate and again in Avengers: Infinity War as a bus passenger with Parker. This led to speculation Silk just might enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe and appear in the untitled Avengers 4 film. While heads of Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios, Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige, haven’t commented on Silks possible inclusion, they did say Venom would more than likely not crossover into the MCU.

Was Cindy’s cameo in Spider-Man: Homecoming and Avengers: Infinity War hinting at the Spider-Man spinoff or do you think Silk will web-sling into the MCU in the near future?

Of course this development doesn't confirm Silk is coming to the big screen, but hopefully Sony will have more news for fans of this heroine soon!

Meanwhile, Venom, the first spin-off in the Spider-Man franchise arrives in theaters October 5th. Watch the trailer here and let us know what you think!

Kevin Spacey Returns to Hollywood
2018-06-22 14:44:45 ET by Brittany Allen

Kevin Spacey will star in the upcoming Billionaire Boys Club after his hiatus from Hollywood following allegations of sexual misconduct.

In an October interview, Star Trek: Discovery actor Anthony Rapp claimed Spacey made sexual advances when the actor was only 14. Spacey, who would have been 26 at the time of the advances, issued a statement via twitter claiming he is “beyond horrified to hear this story.” Spacey continues, “I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago. But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior, and I am sorry for all the feelings he described having carries with him all these years.” Spacey ends his statement with, “I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man.”

Following Anthony Rapp’s interview, over a dozen men claim Spacey had assaulted, sexually harassed, or attempted to rape them. Five of these men say they were only teens at the time.

Days after allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced, production of Netflix’s House of Cards sixth season was halted. Ultimately, Netflix made the decision to continue the sixth and final season of House of Cards without Kevin Spacey, who played politician Frank Underwood for five seasons.

Hollywood continued to distance Spacey. Talent agency, CAA, and Spacey’s publicist Staci Wolfe of Polaris, cut ties with the actor. Spacey was removed from the completed film, All The Money In The World and replaced by actor Christopher Plummer despite having to re-shoot all of Spacey’s scenes two months before release.

In November, Kevin Spacey checked himself into The Meadows rehab clinic in Arizona to seek treatment and hasn’t been seen in the public eye since.

Vertical Entertainment defended their decision to release Billionaire Boys Club amid the scandal in a statement:

"We hope these distressing allegations pertaining to one person’s behavior – that were not publicly known when the film was made almost 2.5 years ago – do not tarnish the release. We don’t condone sexual harassment on any level and we fully support victims of it. At the same time, this is neither an easy nor insensitive decision to release this film in theaters, but we believe in giving the case, as well as hundreds of crew members who worked hard on the film, the chance to see their final product reach audiences. In the end, we hope audiences make up their own minds as to the reprehensible allegations of one person’s past, but not at the expense of the entire cast and crew present on this film."

Billionaire Boys Club is a biographical crime drama based on a 1980’s group of wealthy Los Angeles boys who establish a Ponzi scheme that ends in murder. Billionaire Boys stars Emma Roberts, Jeremy Irvine, Judd Nelson, Cary Elwes, Billie Lourd, and of course Kevin Spacey.

Billionaire Boys Club releases on VOD platforms July 17th and in select theaters August 17th.

ABC Officially Orders 'Roseanne' Spin-Off 'The Conners'
2018-06-22 03:39:49 ET by Jack Anderson

As we have reported on May 29, following some racist comments on Twitter by actress Roseanne Barr, ABC decided to officially cancel the successful revival of the TV series Roseanne.

While some may think this only affects the lead actress and a few others from the cast and crew, we learned that approximately 200 crew members lost their job, all of that because of a single tweet.

Soon following this drastic decision, ABC toyed with the idea of coming up with a spin-off from the series, obviously without Roseanne Barr. Now, less than a month after the incident, ABC has just confirmed and officially ordered the spin-off series. The series even has a working title: The Conners.

Roseanne had such a successful return on TV, that it was all but logical that the studio would try to continue producing more episodes. The only question was how to do it without the tumultuous lead actress.

The series is planned to air this Fall and will have a first season of 10 episodes. It will pick up the 8PM Tuesday slot that Roseanne left following its cancellation.

After reaching a settlement, Roseanne Barr will have no involvement whatsoever in the spin-off series. Barr commented in a statement “I regret the circumstances that have caused me to be removed from Roseanne. I agreed to the settlement in order that 200 jobs of beloved cast and crew could be saved, and I wish the best for everyone involved.”

It will be interesting to see how the writers decide to have her character disappearing.

Star Wars Anthology is Now Far, Far Away
2018-06-21 14:25:22 ET by Brittany Allen

Plans for future films in the Star Wars Anthology may now be far, far away. The most recent spin-off film of the Star Wars Franchise, Solo: A Star Wars Story, fell short. Released at the end of May, the second film in the Star Wars Anthology Series didn’t even make half of their $250 million dollar reported budget going into the third week of release. Grossing $196.2 million domestically as of date, it’s clear Solo didn’t rise to the same success of other films in the Star Wars franchise.

Anthology Series

In 2015, shortly after the Rogue One project was announced as a standalone film, Lucasfilms officially announced a collective of spinoff films would form the Star Wars Anthology Series. Lucasfilm’s president, Kathleen Kennedy, states Lucas “was really interested in exploring all the stories that existed inside the universe.”

Meanwhile, Disney CEO Bon Iger announced long-term planning for the Star Wars franchise. By the end of 2016, before Rogue One was released, writers were hired to develop a second and third stand-alone anthology film. In fact, the second film was given a May 2018 release date back in 2015.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story released in December 2016 and topped box office charts. Rogue One was Star Wars third film to earn over one billion dollars. With production costs hitting $200M, profit from this spinoff was astounding. With IMDb showing a 7.8/10 rating, it’s safe to say Rogue One was a success.

A few things could play into Solo’s lukewarm reception at the box office. A May release date placed Solo in competition with several summer blockbusters such as Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2. IMDb has Solo at a 7.2/10 rating, but at only 99,000 reviews (compared to Rogue One’s 430,000) it may be too early to determine the overall reception of the Solo film.

For now, plans for the Obi-Wan focused third spin off film in the Star Wars Anthology have been put on hold. Lucasfilm’s next film is the 2019 release of Episode IX, the last part of The Force Awakens Star Wars trilogy.

Ask Your Questions to The X-Files Scientist Anne Simon
2018-06-20 14:23:38 ET by Jack Anderson

Fans of the TV series and movie franchise The X-Files know Anne Simon. Author of the 2001 book The Real Science Behind the X-Files: Microbes, Meteorites, and Mutants, Simon has been a close scientific advisor to showrunner Chris Carter. As we are currently preparing an interview of Mrs. Simon, mostly focused about her book, we are giving an exclusive opportunity to our members to ask her questions.

We do not promise that all of your questions will go into the final interview, but we'll definitely pick some of the most interesting ones.

Feel free to reply to this message with your questions. We will be updating this topic along the way, until we do the interview.

Here are the current questions:

Question 1 - By IronButterfly83
Thinking back on Ice and Fight the Future: In light of recent discoveries of viruses found alive in thawing permafrost, back in the 90's, did you ever think something like this could actually have become a reality?

Question 2 - By IronButterfly83
On season 11, the threat of global pandemic: There is fear that smallpox and the bubonic plauge could be found alive in the permafrost of Siberia. With the smallpox vaccine phased out, the threat of an actual global pandemic seems to be a reality. What are your thoughts on this?

Question 3 - By IronButterfly83
These previously dormant viruses could potentially find their way into the oceans. Birds could collect and transport during migration. Animals restricted to arctic regions could face extinction if exposed to the wrong virus. Do you think we could see some kind of global event in our lifetime? Other thoughts?

Question 4 - By DuaneB
Would you say that the show would have had the same resounding if the scientist aspect were not so strong and as best as possible threated in a realistic way? Or could we say that it goes together with the emergence a female archetype like Scully? How could you analyze the difficult position for a creator that is to create an intelligent scientist presence in show that mainly speaks about irrationality? Isn't it a contradictory but creative position?

Star Trek: Discovery Showrunner Gets Exclusive Five Year Deal
2018-06-20 05:58:06 ET by Jack Anderson

The Star Trek: Discovery series went into many production problems. Original showrunner Brian Fuller left the series, only to be replaced by Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts, who were also fired recently.

CBS has decided to give the reins to Alex Kurtzman. But not only that, Kurtzman is actually getting an exclusive five-year deal and will oversee not only the production of Star Trek: Discovery, but all the TV Star Trek projects, including a Starfleet Academy show, a limited series based on the Wrath of Khan story, as well as a limited series and an animated series.

Some are even projecting that actor Patrick Stewart could return as Jean-Luc Picard. But there is no confirmation from CBS Television Studios.

Whatever happens, this proves that Star Trek is far from leaving the TV screen. In the meantime, check out the exclusive reviews of Star Trek: The Next Generation, by our brilliant member kimmy.

The X-Files Movie Celebrates its 20th Anniversary
2018-06-19 08:08:36 ET by Jack Anderson

Twenty years ago, fans of the TV series The X-Files were lining up to watch the first feature film based on the Fox television series.
Titled The X-Files, the movie's tagline was also referred by fans as the title itself: Fight the Future. In this 1998 Summer film, Special FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully are doing a rogue investigation - the FBI X-Files office is closed at that time - linked to an alien virus discovered somewhere in Texas.

Here is the trailer of the film:

In order to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the film's release, Website Website MovieFone released 15 facts that some casual viewers may not know about the film. In it, we learn that approximately 3,000 bees were used during the shot of Mulder and Scully running to the exit door.

We also learn that Chris Carter disliked the blockbuster movie Independence Day, hence the reason why Fox Mulder (portrayed on the screen by David Duchovny) is seen peeing on the poster in a backdoor alley.

The code name of the film was Blackwood. This was a reference to a horror novelist named Algernon Blackwood.

Finally, as a typical X-Files secrecy move, the scripts of the films were printed on red paper, so that it would be difficult to copy them.

Seth MacFarlane 'Embarrassed' to Work for Fox
2018-06-18 03:27:41 ET by Jack Anderson

On Thursday, Fox News host Tucker Carlson told his audience not to trust the major news stations and only trust Fox News:
"If you’re looking to understand what’s actually happening in this country, always assume the opposite of whatever they’re telling you on the big news stations."

Following this remark, actor and producer Seth MacFarlane publicly commented with words towards Fox strong enough to be highlighted:
"In other words, don’t think critically, don’t consult multiple news sources, and in general, don’t use your brain. Just blindly obey Fox News. This is fringe shit, and it’s business like this that makes me embarrassed to work for this company."

It is very rare to see a public figure going against his employer, as all the shows from MacFarlane are actually being produced by and broadcast on Fox. Indeed, Family Guy, American Dad and The Orville are Fox tv series.

Interestingly, it may not be such a bold move, since both Disney and Comcast offered a deal in order to acquire 21st Century Fox. The deal would actually not include Fox News, which may seem like a positive news to MacFarlane.

Gal Gadot Drops First Photos of Wonder Woman 1984
2018-06-17 03:51:34 ET by Jack Anderson

While most of the newly released DC movies were definitely not critical successes (Suicide Squad, Batman v Superman, Justice League), one film broke the spell and became not only a box office success but also a critical one. The movie was Wonder Woman and made more than $800 million at the international box office.
It was all but logical that a sequel be produced.

Directed by female filmmaker Patty Jenkins, the sequel is titled Wonder Woman 1984 and is getting a release date of November 1st, 2019.

Gal Gadot, the actress portraying Wonder Woman, posted the following two pictures of the film:
